Homeschool Portfolio....Ugh!

Today feels daunting. I have to put together a homeschool portfolio for Isaiah in order for him to be able to attend an online school. The whole thing is a little intimidating. You see we have done text books, but we have also done a lot of unit studies. I feel like he has received a pretty solid education, and one that has been pretty enjoyable as well, but trying to figure out how to approach this portfolio has me weak in the knees. I have been doing some research online to see how other homeschoolers are doing it, and they have all said the same thing, "The first time I was a nervous wreck!" *sigh* I completely understand THAT feeling!

The whole thing happened last week. There is a new program that is starting up here in the state of Oregon. They give you a laptop, printer, and online courses. Isaiah wanted to participate right away. Well they only allow a very small group in to their program and the deadline for him to apply is Friday. Of course! So I am sitting at my computer with the paperwork listing his books in front of me, researching portfolios, hacking and wheezing, and wondering how come life has to be so complicated sometimes.....

So, I guess when it is said and done all we can do is hope for the best, and if it doesn't work out than it wasn't meant to be. We will, of course, say a little prayer asking for the Lord's input, than we will just wait and see if he is one of the chosen ones.

Sometimes I wonder who is having to do all the work in this homeschooling venture....I am behind books more than my children, it seems.

Well, I don't know homeschooling portfolio's, but I have put them together for kids at school. Just think of it as a "showcase" of his work. This is your chance to shine and show off all the neat stuff you've done or the pieces of work that have made you so proud!

Good luck!!!

I am sure you will do a wonderful job. But I think I would be a nervous wreck also. Just use your creative brain and run with it.

I am working on transcripts for my Sophomore so he can enroll in the local community college in the Spring. (or maybe Fall, we haven't decided yet)

This is my first one so I am freaking out a little bit!

And you are so right about being behind the books more than the kids. After having homeschooled all 4 kids for 12 grades I think I should be awarded some sort of degree, don't you? :o)

Oh you poor thing--it must be doubly difficult with flu and pregnancy...
praying for God's strength and wisdom to get you through.

I'm sure you will do very well.

I've missed seeing you around. Seems like you have been very busy. Your home looks lovely for Christmas. Just trying to catch up.

Oh Trina.. That sounds like alot of work. I am putting together a transcript for my older kids insurance stuff. Very fun. I have been researching portfolios the last few months, realizing that most colleges prefer portfolios, over homeschool transcripts. I hope Isaiah really likes this program. Let us know.

That does sound like a lot of work for you. I'm sure you will do a great job. Online school may free up some of your time, so it could be worth all this work you are doing now.

We did a HUGE family portfolio year before last and are trying to get one together for this year also. I thought that it was kind of fun, of course there was no pressure on me and it was only for pleasure, record keeping. And my sister gave me pictures of all of our homeschool group functions to add spice.

It was a lot of work though!

AH! I remember the first time I did a transcript. I felt like I had my child's future in my hands. Which of course, hindsight, is silly. They are in the Lord's hand. But still, we are resposible for certain things.

As time & experience went by, so did the fear of failing in this area!! I'm sure soon, you will be an old hat at this.

BTW, I love living in NJ. There are no state requirements. In fact, the state doesn't even know my children exsist until they apply to the state colleges. So, basically I don;t know how to do a potfolio either. lol.

Yikes...I think that would be a bit daunting for me as well.

Have fun with it...and you are not the only one spending more time with the books than the kids. I have often said that my education started with the choice to homeschool!

I hope it all works out
