Close Call

What could be worse than your toddler falling down a flight of stairs? NOTHING! (Actually, there are worse things. I have heard far worse, so forgive the mellow drama that this implied.)

Yesterday evening we had quite a scare. Roman and Abram were playing on the stairs. Which is a no-no in this house, but somehow they are magnetically drawn to the steps, or something. All I know is the huge thud I heard, and the horrible screaming that was coming from Abram terrified me! Den and I ran in to the hall to see what the sickening sounds were all about. I can't tell you the conflict I had in my mind. I didn't want to go for fear of what I would find, but I was running as fast as my feet would carry me in case it was as bad as it sounded. Definitely an emotional contradiction flooding my mind.

When I got to the scene Roman was face down on the hardwood floor, at the bottom of the stairs. Abram was crying and trying to explain how Roman toppled over himself head over heels and head over heels so fast that the only thing that stopped him was the hard wood floor below.

I swept Roman up and examined him as he cried and cried. The goose egg bruise on his noggin said it all. We prayed for him, and rocked him as he continued to point to it and whimper. Of course, you worry about concussions, internal bleeding, and all the other gruesome stories you have heard about from your childhood to adulthood. It took us awhile to soothe him, but then he seemed to do fine. He still wasn't sure though if he wanted ice, a cold wash cloth, or nothing at all for a considerable amount of time. We just made sure all were available at his beck and call.

Thankfully he didn't go to sleep for a few more hours, but it took him awhile to drift off into that deep slumber, that normally is no trouble for him. We made sure that he woke up a few times in the night, and today he seems great. What a blessing! His bruise looks noticeable, but not as wicked as it looked the night before. He is happy, alert, and well balanced. All excellent signs!

Now back to reinstructing the boys about our stair rule, again. Somehow I think Abram will be much more diligent about staying off of them, and not encouraging Roman to play there either. I haven't ever seen him so shook up.....poor big brother.

Oooh, it is a terrible thing to experience, your baby being hurt. Sorry you had to feel that, but I'm sure it was a good example what with the prayer and all. Pretty sure they'll be more careful around the stairs now eh? I'm so glad that Roman seems fine, whew.

Gale: Yeah...lessons all around! He is a little leary of the stairs today, which is perfect! But he is doing great, thank the Lord!

I can feel your heart skipping a beat when that happened. That sounded like it was very scary. I've had several things happen that tie my stomach into knots! My kids always headed for roads, which is my deepest fear because my mom and dad lost their 20 month old firstborn that way. I'm so thankful that God didn't allow anything worse than a bruise and goose egg! It's AMAZING how God protects us and our loved ones even when we don't know he is!

Jules: That is so sad about your parents losing their first baby at 20 months. Roman is 23 months so very close in age! Im so thankful that I havent had to experience that kind of sorrow. I hope to never, obviously, good Lord willing.

Poor boys! Yep, it's all fun and games until somebody loses an eye, eh? I look around at my siblings and wonder how on earth they could think nobody is going to get hurt, then I remember that when I was their age, I didn't understand either! Very glad nothing serious happened, just a bruise.

Goodness, I'm glad he was OK. My boys are always doing something dangerous. My heart is always beating in panic mode! How you survived having so many without pulling all you hair out is beyond me. ~Karlie

Trina I can so see Abram crying out with panic. I am so thankful Roman is okay. The Lord is so good to watch over our babies. I can't wait to meet Roman all over again.

Why do kids always want to play were we ask them not to? I am so glad he is o.k. That would of gave me a heart attack. I don't do good with injuries.

I'm so glad that Roman's ok. It's nice to know that God is watching and protecting our children when we can't be there every second of their life.
