Close Call

While finding our spot on the bleachers, at the Regional Wrestling Tournament a couple of weeks ago, Abram had asked if he could go explore. Knowing that we would be in this relatively small gym for many hours, I agreed. Off he trotted down the bleacher stairs to investigate his surroundings. All the while, I could see him as he weaved in out of the crowd, around the gymnasium.

Not long after he left, he returned and sat next to me again. Busy with Roman, and reading the brackets over Den's shoulder, I was trying to half listen to Abram as he began to express some concern over a discovery. I was sort of listening, and also sort of reading, but his continuous questioning droned on. I finally stopped multi-tasking, and tried to focus in on his long questioning.

Abram was concerned about the fact that there was a bathroom in the gym, and why would someone put a bathroom in such a public area. I explained that most gyms had bathrooms in them, and many times showers as well. I continued on with the explanation that it was just more convenient that way for everyone involved...yada yada yada. I could tell that Abram was still not pleased with my long answer, and tried pointing to the area of where he saw this bathroom. As he pointed, I couldn't see this restroom that had completely consumed him. This is when a little red flag popped into my head, and I decided this may be one of those times that I would have to investigate.

So I plopped Mr. Roman into Daddy's lap, and told Abram to show me this bathroom that he was so concerned with. He, feeling relieved that I was actually going to follow through, led the way down the bleacher stairs, and in the general vicinity of this odd bathroom.

Confidently, I walked behind his tiny feet, as he hurriedly went to the other side of the gym, beside the mats. As he began to slow down his pace, I looked around to find no such bathroom or locker room. What I did find was two water fountains instead. One water fountain was made of metal, looked newer, and was inset into the wall. In fact, there were a couple of children hunched over, partaking of the cold water that was piping out of its spicket. However, the other one, was an older porcelain unit, that protruded from the wall, and was obviously no longer working for the faucet had been removed, and in its place was a small opening. As we stood there, Abram pointed to the porcelain fountain and said, "See? Why is this here in front of everyone?" It took me a moment, with a questioning look on my face, after all I am a female and there was no question that this was a drinking fountain to me. However, to Abram, this looked just like a urinal, and as I stood there examining it, I had my A-Ha moment! I admit it took me a few nano seconds before it registered, but once it did I felt a wave of emotions, that quickly resembled my life flashing before my eyes.

1. Shock! How could something look so similiar to a urinal be placed in the gym?

2. Relief! That I actually listened to Abram, and didn't just tune out a five year olds' silly concern.

3. Horror! This day could have ended on a VERY VERY different note!

4. Gratitude! That upon further inspection, all was put to rest, and the real bathroom was quickly found.

WHEW!!!!

Oh Trina, to think he could have used that urinal if he had not been so shy. We both know boys who would have. Uncle had a good laugh this morning.

That is hysterical. Poor Abram. I can imagine how concerning that must have been. I AM impressed that he had the knowledge to know that was not a place to go to the restroom. I can see lots of boys that wouldn't have thought twice about it. Sounds like you have raised him right. High five to Mom!

That was so funny. I love the way the mind of a five year works. I think I would have had a hard not laughing hysterically at that moment. Your son is adorable. I love reading your posts because I think its so encouraging to others, it's usually funny because you see the humor in things. Your boys are very blessed to have you.

Now THAT is funny! Poor little guy, I bet he was thinking "these are pretty strange people here". My girls would never even get it, they are so oblivious to male things. Give them time eh?

It's those half listening moments that get me into the most trouble. Great job going and checking it out.
