Okay here is my glorious confession. I love to paint, well I dont love to paint, but I love what a good coat of paint can do for me and my house. Its like a cleansing, a fresh start, quite addictive for me. Its cheap, easy to get your hands on, and you can make any color you want. Ohhh the possibilities....
Today was the day to paint the playroom/Roman's new nursery. We had the boys clear out all the toys, bins, etc. So once the room had been emptied Dennis and I walked in with our rollers and 2 gallons of paint. Why 2? Well it's not because its a large room, in fact we are hardpressed to put a queen size bed and dresser in, with room to walk around. It's because, well read on.... When we walked in we both just stood there. We both scanned the four walls, and said, "Hooooly Cow!" It looked like someone had threw a hand grenade in there and all the shrapnel had hit the walls. It was crazy! So this is why the two cans, it needed a quadruple coat, I would have liked to have put telflon on if I could have got my hands on that. Of course this is when we began our sick little habit of talking about what it will be like to not have kids someday. We first began with our typical complaints, "Man we look like we barely survived Hurrican Katrina", "We just can't keep anything looking nice around here", and "They're like barnyard animals, yeah pigs"(we've raised pigs so we know what we're talking about here). Now once you get this started between the two of us we are like a locomotive that can't stop, no matter who is on the tracks. We almost feed off of these conversations. We start dreaming about what life will be like to have an office with a tuck and rolled leather chair and mahogany desk, a guest room that is straight out of Better Homes and Garden, or how we will even be able to buy specialty foods and not go to the kitchen only to discover they're GONE!! This is our private little thrill, our secret little thrill, all the while running strokes of paint up and down the walls. Its how we get through these painful moments of our life...LOL So we got it all done and stood back and both just took a deep breath and smiled. We welcomed the boys in to show off the fruit of our labor, and that's when we began the second drill. You know the one, "Dont touch the walls", "No more roughhousing in here", "No eating or drinking in this room", the one where your kids nodd and smile at you with glazed over eyes and promise you the world. You can see that they're just rattling off all the lovely guarantees from years of brainwashing, but you continue on because well....you're on a roll and isn't that what ALL parents do? I think its in the handbook or something. After the predictable sermon we all stood in the little 8x10 room, shoulder to shoulder and each person grinned with glassy eyes silently contemplating the possibilities, or it could have just been the paint fumes.

Too funny! We have those 'one of these days' conversations sometimes too. At first they're funny and then I get sad. LOL!
Hey, I have seen this wonderful room that you painted for Roman, my sweet little grandson. It is bright and cheery and painted with love for this wonderful little boy. I got to sleep in this room way before Roman's arrival. Roman's Momma, my daughter was very sick with the flu when I arrived at their house, the last of June, 2005. I flew up from Eugene, Oregon to help with the load of tasks that Trina couldn't do because of being sick. It was a joy to be there. Love, Mom
Thanks for visiting my blog. My friend is adopting a little boy from Russia named Roman. I really like that name. http://www.linsadoption.blogspot.com/
When my oldest two boys were younger I truly saw them as untamed little animals- with no human reasoning, understanding or concern for any of our personal belongings. (I don't know if you have seen the "I Love Lucy" rerun where these boys pretend they are Indians and tie up the babysitter- that was like my boys) Luckily they grew out of this! Good luck with keeping your room nice.
I heard Mr. Clean Magic Eraser is useful.
you need to get with my wife and develop your own club. then you can go from house to house painting until your heart is content.
#1 I love paint. Why have none of our paint jobs come out exactly as we had envisioned though? Cheap paint sucks. That's all I'll say there.
#2 We have those same conversations. I was going to blog about this in the next few days too! LOL! I was just thinking the other day that I think part of the secret of longevity in marriage is dreaming about the future. It's not diminishing the present joys or wanting to rush past them but it's healthy to always be picturing your lives together in various stages. It implies that our being together is a given... a fact... It helps your individual dreams to be the dreams that you have as a couple as well. It helps the "me" and the "us" to merge in our minds.
I'm going off here. I guess I should have just blogged on this when I was thinking of it! LOL!
Nan
Nicki: I am glad that I'm not alone in this fantasy sometimes. And yes, somedays it makes me incredibly sad too.
MOM: I love you, and you are so good to me. Coming up to take care of me makes you such a jewel!! So come see me again Soooooon!
Jen: I love the name Roman too. Let me just say coming up with a 5th boys name that we loved was a challenge, and took us the entire nine months to decide. I will definitely try the magiceraser. I'm up for anything that works magic...lol
Pirate: Yah I probably should. LOL I think it may be a form of sickness that we both share.hehehe
Nan: That is so true and well put. I think dreaming about our future is exciting and healthy. I love having the boys around though, but there are days where I think "what if"...Oh and feel free to post about it anyway...I'll still read it!!
motherisland: I figured you would understand playing with colors in your house. Sometimes I question if I am normal with this, but you can always paint over it if you hate it. We have tried colors in our laundry room that the boys said was, "Depressing!" LOL So we kept experimenting until we found a color that we were all happy with it. My Mom actually came up and redid this room with me and I love it now, which its just the laundry room, but its a room I spend a lot of time in so.......
So now I know who to call when I need some painting done...lol
Mike: You can call me anytime to paint. I love to decorate too, so just give me a holler!
Salena: I used to feel that way about paint, but then I realized that white will let you start all over again. You just need someone you trust to help you out the first couple of times.
Life is VERY different once kids are here....LOL
Of course this is when we began our sick little habit of talking about what it will be like to not have kids someday.
My husband and I have that conversation all too frequently!
I, too, love the power of paint!
