Gone Batty!!

Ahhhh my Mom came to visit. What a treat! She helped me immensely around here, especially with the outside. She did some serious pruning and weed killing, and by the end of the day we were all plum wore out and ready to hit the hay. Now when the sun goes down around here the house gets quite dark, because the trees encase us completely. It's quite stunning by day and can be quite creepy by night, well at least that was the feeling I got from my mother....lol The other dilemma is that I haven't purchased any blinds or curtains for this house yet. You see the house is FULL of windows, more than I care to count, and so the price of dressing them all will cost me a pretty penny. So I don't want to buy just anything, and I don't want to pay just anything, so this whole window treatment thing will be well thought out. Anyhow, my Mom just can't stand the thought that we are staying in this house without any window coverings, it gives her the heeby- jeebies, and she let me know she couldn't believe that I wasn't uncomfortable with it too. I let her know that I wasn't crazy about it, but we are tucked up privately on this hill and it doesn't truly concern me. So we ended on that note, but not until she checked (and double checked )all nine of my downstairs doors to make sure they were locked. I don't think I have giggled so much in a long time. However, I did feel sorry for her, after all none of us want our guests to feel unsafe or uncomfortable in our homes, but it does stir up some childhood memories....lol

So after she was safely tucked in bed, upstairs, with her door shut, the rest of us were still milling around downstairs finishing up evening duties. It all seemed routine enough until I saw something dark swoop down and then quickly disappear. I screeched at Den that something was flying around in the house, to which I think I got an eye roll. You see Den tends to think that my mind is susceptible to scary things, and I think he thought my mom spooked me. WHATEVER! hehehe Anyway, just then the black THING swooped down again and flew on past the two of us. Den declared it to be a bird, I screamed it was a bat. Yes, our tones were quite different from each other. Now this stupid bat was flying like a crazed flying beast. We have really high ceilings and loft areas and so it would fly up into the rafters and then dive down towards us like an enemy fighter. It took all I had to not scream as it continued to make it's wild and unpredictable fly-bys. Den thought it was cute, I thought Den was an idiot! I was not a happy girl! The boys then jumped on the bandwagon, to which I let everyone know that this bat must DIE!!! They all wanted to shew it out the door, but I wanted to never see it again. I had no qualms about it, nope, not even a shred of doubt! I declared that a broom would have to be used and thankfully we had three. So the witch hunt was on! Now let's not confuse you by implanting the idea that I held a broom, oh no, it took all I had to not be screaming like a woman lit on fire as this dumb crazy thing flew round and round me. I had no idea where I could go that would make me feel safe. I could have ran into the bathroom, but I didn't trust that the menfolk would dispose of it properly. They may actually have compassion and let it out, but my problem with that is that the bat had made it's way in from somewhere and there was no reason to believe that it wouldn't find it's way back in again. Oh No Sirreeee Bob, this bat was going down, and I was going to make sure I saw it with my beady little eyes!

After a little more commotion the bat was swatted and it was dead. I'm sorry that causes some of you to have a tear in your eye, but it's all fine and dandy until it's in your house with your children. Uh Uh....not in this woman's house!

Anyway, after the deed had been done I ran into my mother's room. I must have been winded from all the festivities because she asked me what was wrong. I hesitated to tell her, but I couldn't fight off the strong urge to share. I told her that after she went to bed that we were fighting a bat. She just looked at me with all the ill of ease one could imagine, to which I had to start laughing again. I am sure she didn't exactly have the greatest nights sleep. I mean I know I didn't. I worried for several nights to come that there was a nest of them and that we would be in for this sort of battle nightly, however that hasn't been the case.

Enjoy the bat photo below:

Oh I am laughing so hard! We used to have bats in our house sometimes when we lived in this old Victoria mansion out in the middle of a tree farm! It was when the kids were all little and upstairs was this scarey unfinished room (imagine an unfinished Victorian old room?)We had put sheet plastic over the doorway to keep yuckies out (or in!). But every once in a while we would all be watching TV in the dark and we would see a swoop and I'm sure I looked exactly like you so aptly described yourself! LOL... bats are nice... but they gotta stay outside!

Lol, that brings back funny memories of the boys tracking down and killing the random bats that somehow would get in. They used brooms too. ;D

*shudders* I was right next to the unfinished room my mom wrote about. Sometimes I'd walk into my room and there would be one flappin' about...Thats my only least favorite thing about living out in the middle of no where. ;D Well, that and the lady bugs. Ew...

Yikes! I would have really been freaking out! One time, as a child, we had come back from vacation and saw a bat wrapped up, asleep in our living room. My parents quickly got a jar and scooped it into the jar. I remember looking at that bat's face, it looked like it (literally) wanted to kill us. It looked like a vampire after prey. It was creepy! But I'm glad you were able to catch and get rid of it! I'm sure it was quite an adventure!

That was so nice of your Mom to help you out. I've never had an experience with a bat, but I don't think I would be any better than you, if I ever do! In the picture, the bat is actually kind of cute! I probably wouldn't even think the picture was cute, though, if I had been there?!!

Just thinking about the chaos in your night cracked me up! The first thing I thought about was the past adventures with critters at Sis. Lori's house. Although I know for a fact that the thought of a night-time spider on her pillow (real or imaginary) still sends her in a frenzy!
Raine: I used to think lady bugs were so cute UGH:/
The look on our husbands faces when we ask them to be our Knight and save us from the evil crawlies in the middle of the night is priceless. Sounds like your boys are all growing up to be good Knights!

Oh the memories! I remember the battle of the bat at our house, I think we came close to killing each other in our hurry to dispatch the bat. Definitely worthy of the heebie jeebies. As far as the windows go, I'm going to email you.

A new meaning to "bats in the belfry"?? :0 Your post was very entertaining. I'm glad it ended well. Your mom cracked me up. I'll bet she even checked some of those windows to see if they were locked?? :)

That is so funny!! I can just imagine it. I don't like fluttery things so I know i would have been freaking out. The time we had a bird in our house I hated it. The kids were screaming, it was just Teala and Bekah, and I think I was to.

Jeff would side with your mom. He hates uncovered windows at night. I would hate to have to lock 9 doors every night.
