Sweet Smelling Savor

I woke up this morning bright and early. Well actually it was still dark, which is the norm this time of year. I hopped on my blog really quick to read my comments when my music came on. I climbed back in to my bed and just listened to the songs as I planned my day. It wasn't long before the boys found their way in to my room and we talked about the night befores activities. How much fun they had, and how much candy they got. It was a great start to the morning.

Then I went downstairs to turn on some lights and nab a piece of my pumpkin swirl bread that I had made the day before. (Yum...yet deadly, calorie wise.) Then I came upstairs to write my post. As I sat at my desk I thought I would write about the things that came to my mind this morning. You see, as most moms, I think from the moment we get up til the time we go to bed we are thinking about our days and how to handle certain situations with our children. Well I am no different.

I have been reading a book that talks about how to have the kind of home you and your family deserve to have. It's christian related, and it gives some input on the small details that you can either take for granted in your home, or leave out entirely. One of the chapters talks about the smell of your home. That every house has a smell. You may not even be aware of your own house's scent. However, you can affect the smell if you so desire. Maybe its a home cooked meal at a certain time of day. Or maybe your children will remember the smell of cookies being baked regularly at your home. On the other hand, it could be fresh laundry drying and you can smell lavender fabric softener floating through the air, either way your family and friends should have a positive memory when they are thinking of YOUR home.

I LOVED this thought. I know that when we have tried to sell our homes that we make sure it smells delicious for the people who are coming to check it out. We have either baked something that day, or just put a pot of warm water on the stove with cinnamon sprinkled in and let it simmer. This isn't a secret recipe, but let me just say that it truly works. It makes people feel homey. Why only do this for guests, more importantly be aware of it for your children and your husband.

The other thing that I was taught about was music. My parents had a lot of gospel music piping through our home. Sometimes it was classic country from the 60s though, either way, they both have a very special place in my heart. We have talked ALOT to our boys about the power of music. That God talks about it and uses it throughout scripture. It speaks to your heart; good or bad. I don't make the boys ONLY listen to my style of music, but they definitely hear it most of the time in our home. Putting on a little music in the background softly while you are cooking, schooling, or cleaning the house is one way that sweet memories are being made while no one is saying a word.

I just thought about these things this morning upon rising. I thought about how I was going to influence my children today, because they will, indeed be influenced in some way. So why not make sure it's positive and intentional.

Neat post. It is amazing how your senses can affect your mood or other peoples mood. I remember when I was little on saturdays in the winter I would wake up to the smell of pancakes coming through the heat vent and I knew that my dad was upstairs making breakfast for me and my brother. It smelled sooo good and I will always remember how that made me feel.

You know I love music.. I sometimes down size your blog as I scroll around the internet so I can have it going in the background because I love your songs. I totally agree that our children WILL be influenced one way or another, so we better make our time with them count!!
Hope you have a good day!!

As usual you have made a wonderful point. I wonder what my house smells like? Bread baking hopefully. We do listen to gospel music almost all day long. How did your landlord checkpoint go?

I also think it is neat how different smells, and music will put you in different moods. My favorite aroma is coffee brewing ;) I really enjoyed reading your blog. You always have a great way with words :)

Gale: My landlord didn't show up! Can you believe that? lol We called at about 5pm to find out if they were still coming, and they said they drove by and it looked good enough from the outside that they were happy. They also said that the guy knocked, and knocked, and rang the doorbell, even tried the key but it wouldnt work. However, our door wasn't even locked...hahaha I think he was burnt out from all the other houses and just gave us a pass, and told the company he tried. Either way we are off the hook til next year so YIPPEE!!

I am glad you reminded us about the sounds and smells of our homes. Our cd player was broken(you know children) and I haven't replaced it. I have even gotten out of the habit of singing around the house. I will try to do better. Singing together is one of my precious childhood memories.

Thank you Sylvia

I TOTALLY agree. When I go to one of my (longtime)friend's house, she always has some music playing nd the smell of dinner in the air. It feels very comforting.
Just out of curiosity...what is the name of the book that you are reading?

That is so true! When my great-grandmother gave me one of her quilts, it smelled like her house. I didn't wash it for the longest b/c I could get a "whiff" on grandma's house from that quilt and that was instant peace.

I like your music, and the bread looks good (I don't know if it is a real picture or not, but it looks good.)

I remember my family singing alot but I only remember them singing in the car on the way to church. I am positive we sang together at other times, but I think that is one of my favorite places where we sang together so it sticks out in my mind. I try to pass that down to my kids.
