A Piece Of My Past

I have watched many World War II movies that I have enjoyed very much. Some gave me a feeling of great sorrow, because so many people died fighting, not to mention the Holocaust. War, even through its sadness excites me, but I can't say why. That's why I took a picture of my Great Uncle Ralph's World War II Veteran flag. It's an old piece of our families' legacy. In reality it's just a flag in a wooden box, but to me it is so much more. I often sit on the couch and gaze at it with the Civil War hat on top thinking about the history. It intrigues me. I hope one day I can own this valuable heirloom.

We have been practicing our writing in homeschooling. I thought it would be fun for the boys to take our camera each week and have them take a picture of anything they wanted, then have them write a short paragraph about the photo. I am trying to teach the boys how to express themselves through their writing this year. Its not about being wordy, but their choice of words. The boys are loving this. We are doing this assignment once a week. Then we are having Dennis judge which picture and paragraph is best, and they win a spot on my blog for the day. So this week's winner was Isaiah.

Wow that is fantastic, i wasn't expecting that to be written by one of your boys.
I have to write this idea down so i don't forget when the kids are old enough to do this.

Another great idea, Trina! I'm going to put this one in my 'ideas' file.

Well done, Isaiah!! You did a wonderful job expressing your feelings through your writing. I could also relate to what you were writing about.

Chantel: Isaiah says, "Thanks, it was fun writing it."

Stephanie: Homeschooling has become more and more of a real joy as we are becoming more creative rather then as convential. Its taking me a while to get comfortable to step out of certain boundaries, and its paying off with the joy of the boys.

Kelly: It started off with them watching me write stories and tie pictures in with them for my blog, and the boys started to get into it too.

Renee: Yes, anything we can do that doesnt feel like a chore that produces great results, is a BLESSING for sure.

NeuroticMom: I wasnt sure how well the boys would do either, but they each surprised me, pleasantly too.

Nicki: You have an IDEA file? Now thats a great idea too.
Isaiah says, "Thanks, I love to think alot about history, and so this one was easy for me to write."

He is so talented! I'll have to try your idea. My son HATES to write so maybe the photo would motivate him more.

He does love WWII, though...in fact is obsessed with it. If he were ever on a trivia show and WWII was the category, he'd sweep it, lol.

Writewingnut: All of my sons hate writing too. So this has been a challenge here as well, and yes the photo really does help, and only a paragraph too.
My sons are so into WWII and could answer all sorts of ridiculous questions concerning it too. It must be a boy thing!! LOL

My husband, Mike is a WWII fan too, he knows the name of every battle and every airplane that was flown and a ton of little known details about everything. Personally I just know that we got hit by Japan and then we helped defeat Hitler and then Hitler invaded Russia and Russia's cold was a big factor in Hitler's defeat. Something like that. We will be visiting a WWII museum in Russia which I am excited to see.

You sound like a great homeschool mom who really gets her kids involved.

How old is this son? What a wonderful sentiment he has about a piece of your family's history!

The photo is great and so is the paragraph. This public school teacher would give him an A++!
