Our Lazy, Incompetent, Forgetful ToothFairy

Image hosting by Photobucket"Where is that bloomin' ToothFairy?!" We have the lamest toothfairy at our house. I am not sure what the kids have done to deserve such a one that is as lazy as he/she, but regardless that's the one the boys were assigned.

Years ago, when River began to lose his teeth, we discovered just how tooth challenged our fairy was. Sometimes DAYS would go by before poor River would receive his money. We tried with all our might to keep him encouraged, and even came up with every excuse in the book to try to cover for this incompetent toothfairy, in hopes that after a few close calls that this toothfairy would get wise.

Here are just a few toothfairy mishaps that all my toothless boys have encountered.

1.) Would just plain out forget, or MAYBE the boys head was just too heavy to lift off the pillow, and so was incapable of getting the tooth. Now this one excuse began many a question like, "Well Mama, do you think MY head is heavier then most other childeren's heads?" In order not to give my child a fat head complex, I would then clear up that our toothfairy must be VERY scrawny. It wasnt the boys fault, we just got a wimpy toothfairy.

2.) After some deliberation, we decided to move the tooth to the kitchen table, this way there was no worry of a body part getting in the way of retreiving the tooth. However on many occasions our forgetful toothfairy would not come. The boys would get up to see the tooth still in a ziploc baggie on the table and would run in to me and say, "Mama, the toothfairy forgot my tooth AGAIN!!!" I would roll my eyes, and say, "Geesh, I may have to put in some calls or something, I will see what I can do, this toothfairy is pretty irresponsible." The boys would agree, and of course I would giggle too and think, "Oh my goodness, what is wrong with us as parents that we CANNOT accomplish this task!"

3.) One time, well let just say three, that feels more honest, the boys would think the toothfairy would come, I mean there was money on the table and the said tooth was gone, but then later that morning they would see the tooth laying around on a counter or washing machine. Then of course the questions would begin again. "Mama, why would the toothfairy give me money, but not TAKE the tooth?" I would then think of something anything to cover my hubby's trail, "Ummm, well you know how scrawny OUR toothfairy is, it was probably too heavy for him, he needed a break and will come back for it later." The boy would ask, "Do you think the toothfairy just dropped it?" My reply would be, "Maybe so honey, I will have to put in another call to their headquarters." This always put an end to the discussion, since I would be talking to the big guy about our dilemma.

4.) Sometimes the toothfairy would get everything right. The tooth was gone, money in a baggie on the table. The boys were relieved and thrilled. They would come running into my bed and poor out their change to see how much the toothfairy had left them, when to our surprise there would be "Chuck E. Cheese"Tokens!!! "Why would the toothfairy leave tokens Mama?" Half the time I would just giggle and blame the mental instability, feeble body, or utter disrespect of time on this poor toothfairy.

So now we are still enduring the pathetic toothfairy who does fly-bys at our house. Just Saturday night Levi lost a molar, he showed us his huge gaping hole in his mouth and we were all thrilled for him. Now by this time, my older boys KNOW we have a serious toothfairy problem, in fact we have even been called to the floor ourselves by the boys. The doubt begins to surface, "Mom come on, why do we still DO the toothfairy thing? You know there is no such thing." Which my response is, " Well if you dont believe in the toothfairy he/she doesnt have to come any more. What I mean to say.....*clearing throat* no more money." Which the response is, "Oh I believe, I believe." Then we exchange knowing glances and chuckle.

So its now a running gag in our house. Levi left a HUGE note on the chalkboard for the seeing challenged toothfairy, with an enormous arrow pointing down to the table. When the toothfairy forgot again, we all laughed heartily and began to feel sorry for the poor little guy. Maybe he's having family problems, or he is sleep deprived, or Toothfairy Headquarters isn't paying him enough. We aren't sure! Abram who hasn't lost a tooth yet, is already been made abreast of our delinquent, lazy, scrawny, forgetful toothfairy. He comes running to the table as well to see if the toothfairy has accomplished his ONE job. Luckily, this morning he did. Which caused a huge celebration in the house by the two younger boys.

We may have to call in the troops when the smaller boys begin to lose their teeth. Maybe the younger toothfairies in the house can help us lazy forgetful ones. If not, then the legacy will continue, and we will continue to receive concerned letters that are to be delivered to Toothfairy Headquarters. Now those letters are hysterical, and they are staying in my keepsake box so that Den and I can have a hearty chuckle later in life.Image hosting by Photobucket

This is all too familiar. My mom never forgot to take my teeth and leave me money. She even made me a tooth fairy pillow (and I have 8 siblings keep in mind). So, the first time that I forgot to be the tooth fairy I was like hyperventilating that I was such a horrible mother. Good thing though- kids are pretty forgiving- since I can shift the blame to the tooth fairy and I have since been late many times. Those are creative excuses that you have used. I think I might try them!

Trina that is so funny!!! When I was about 13 we were doing major spring cleaning and I was responsible for cleaning out the kitchen drawers. Imagine my surprise when I found a little container with about 7 of my baby teeth in it! My mom laughed and said when I lost my last "baby" tooth my dad...umm I mean the Tooth Fairy was going to leave me a necklace. Yeah..we're all glad the Tooth Fairy forgot where he put all the teeth...lol.

Cheryl: You know me too well! In my post about my two babies bdays I typoed one is 6'4" and one is around 4" and someone noticed and teased me. I thought that was so funny!

I think I might live in your fairy district. Is there a number we could call to report this negligent fairy?

Trina said...

BetterFull: Well based on the responses, I am thinking we may need to call the Fairy Union, there seems to be an epidemic!! Sooo glad that I am not alone. LOL

Oh my that is funny. You know it reminds me of a time when I was about 15yrs. old and a good friend and I were playing softball. She was playing shortstop and this ball was hit hard to her and took a bad hop, bounced off a rock and caved her 2 front teeth in. Well needless to say it was not pretty and it was quite scary for awhile, but she ended up able to keep her teeth so I guess there was no need for the tooth fairy on that occasion. Good thing huh?

Whew!!! Good thing...I guess...hahaha

This is another reason why I'm glad we've decided not to do the toothfairy. LOL! I know that I would be horrible at remembering to do it.

I am pretty safe thus far. Our toothfairy was "late" on several occasions. I had to tell the kids she was either caught in bad weather on her way here of had so many homes to go to that she needed to rest and come the next day. They totally believe that. I have bunny pillow with a pocket for the tooth fairy and (bought at our dentists office!) that they hang on their door. And mama has a little porcelin jar each for the kids (pink for the girls, blue for the boys) that the tooth fairy then drops the tooth in - for me to save (she has to look it over first to make sure the kids have been brushing their teeth well.) Goodness gracious, sounds like our toothfairy is kinda conditional! Nah - she's very cool. And she leaves fairy dust...

LOVED your post! :)

My sis and I weren't raised to believe in the tooth fairy or Santa Claus, but we kept up the tooth fairy illusion as a fun joke. When I was 7, the tooth fairy forgot to take my tooth one night. I didn't mention it directly to my mom, but instead left a post-it note on her mirror saying, "I sure hope the tooth fairy remembers my tooth tonight!" When she went to brush her teeth that night she had a good laugh and the tooth fairy did her job.
